Ice Dogs 2003 Team Win Philadelphia Holiday Classic
The Ice Dogs 2003 team took part in the Liberty Cup Tournament Series sponsored by MYHockey Tournaments. The Philadelphia Holiday Classic turned into just that for the Ice Dogs 2003 team, an instant classic!
Our Ice Dogs team showed guts, character, and determination, entering this tournament missing a few key contributors to holiday plans. Additionally injury would limit the team to just three subs on the bench for one game, and the loss of Adam Bostock to illness in the championship game. The Ice Dogs survived it all to bring home a well earned championship.
The Ice Dogs went 3-1 in round robin play with wins over the Grundy Senators (2-1), Lehigh Valley Flames (8-2) and Exton Kings (7-0). The only loss came at the hands of the Delaware Jr. Blue Hens (4-0) in a game that was much closer than the final score. The three wins earned the team a rematch vs the Jr. Blue Hens in the tournament championship game.
Both teams looked a bit gassed in the championship game, playing their 5th games in three days, looking like two punch drunk heavy weights in the tenth round. The Ice Dogs held a 1-0 lead in the third period on a goal by Eric Orzehoski, and with minutes remaining the Jr. Blue Hens showed what they were made of with an effort goal to tie the game. It would take another dirty goal to win this game, and the Ice Dogs would get it with just 44 seconds remaining when Bailey Slotwinski pushed the puck over the goal line after a Luke VanWhy rush led to a rebound opportunity.
The Ice Dogs would hold off one final push by the Jr. Blue Hens when they pulled their goalie with less than a minute remaining. Congrats Ice Dogs 2003 team!
The Ice Dogs 2003 team went undefeated through round robin play at Silver Stick Regionals with wins over the Flyers Youth (2-1), Prince William Panthers (11-1) & Haverford Hawks (5-1). This earned the Ice Dogs the first seed in their bracket, and a semi-final elimination game vs the Grundy Senators. The Ice Dogs defeated the Sens 4-0, and moved on to the Silver Stick Regional Finals vs the NJ Colonials, with Matthew Ogonowski posting a shutout.
The finals game vs the Colonials was a rematch of a non-league 1-1 tie a month or so earlier. Both teams were very evenly matched. The Ice Dogs would score first and go up 2-0, before penalties led to a momentum shift, and the Colonials scoring on a 5 on 3 powerplay. The Colonials continued to dig deep and went ahead early in the third 3-2. Then it was the Ice Dogs turn to match the Colonials never say die attitude and tie the game at three with about 4 minutes remaining. Regulation ended in another tie between these two clubs, and a 10 minute overtime period began.
In a game between evenly matched teams the team that makes the most mistakes will usually wind up on the short end. The Ice Dogs would take penalties in the final minute of play and first minute of OT, and the Colonials shortly after capitalized and scored to win the Silver Stick Final 4-3 in OT. Congrats to both clubs on a game well played, both teams played like champions.
Both finalists were invited to participate in the Silver Stick International Finals in St. Clair Shores Michigan beginning on 1/20/12. The Colonials and Ice Dogs have both officially accepted their invitations and hopefully will have the opportunity for a rematch in the Silver Stick International Finals.
The Ice Dogs Squirt B (2003) team went 4-0 in round robin play with wins vs the SW Jr Knights, Jr. Flyers, LV Flames & Blazers, earning a rematch in the championship game vs the Jr. Flyers. The Ice Dogs would win a tightly contested rematch with the Jr Flyers 3-0, bringing home the tournament championship.
Strong team play was clearly evident during the tournament. Goaltenders Mason Moyer & Matthew Ogonowski posted shutouts in four of the five games. Excellent play from the defense combined with a relentless back check resulted in only two goals allowed over the five games. Balanced scoring from the forwards on all three lines fueled the offense. Congrats Squirt B (2003)!
